KunstCentret Silkeborg Bad / Art Centre Silkeborg Bad:
Puppets from Asia
October 4 - January 18
The theme this year is Asia and we have borrowed a selection of puppets, shadow figures, etc. from a private collector and expert in puppetry, Birgitta Robinger, Oskarström, Sweden. The exhibition will present hand puppets, Chinese shadow characters, marionettes from Burma and China, and rod puppets from Thailand.
When using shadow puppets, the puppeteer is usually behind a light cloth or screen, holding and moving the puppet close to the fabric. The audience sees the shape of the puppet when the figures are backlighted. Many of these marionettes and puppets have characteristically colourful costumes including the use of pearls and embroidery. There will also be shown some of the Vietnamese puppets, which are used in the very special water theatre plays.
Robinger has been a partner in planning and assembling this exhibition, which is in small tableau sets.
In connection with this exhibition we will offer more thorough information about the language of symbols in Asian puppetry.
A large portion of this puppet collection will soon be housed in a permanent puppet gallery, open to the public, under the department of Hallands Bildungsförbund.
