The Purple Sails

A film about the creation of Theatre Forman's theatre play The Purple Sails

Click to see large picture The Forman Brothers' theatre from Prague is known internationally in puppetry circles. Of course, they have also performed in Silkeborg.

Theatre Forman produced 'The Purple Sails', adapted from a novel by Alexander Grin, in 2000 when Prague was the Cultural City of Europe. The show was performed on a 70 m. long boat on the Vltava River in Prague.

The boat, a river barge, was transformed into a floating theatre with a revolving stage and a sail, which is hoisted during the performance, inspired in part by a trip which Petr and Matej Forman took on the Danish ship Georg Stage, arranged by the Silkeborg Puppet Theatre Festival. This film by the young Czech director Miroslav Janek, shows how the play was created. It is a beautiful and poetic film, which shows with humour the project and the involvement of more than 50 people both on land and on sea.

Silkeborg Puppet Theatre Festival would love to have shown the theatre performance, but unfortunately it was not possible. We hope that our audience will be fortunate enough some day to see 'The Purple Sails' or another project on the theatre boat 'Mystery' in Prague.
