The Love Suicides

Click to see large picture About 300 years ago- during the Edo Period in Japan - a young merchant and his courtisan committed a dramatic love suicide in the depths of Sinezaki Forest. The passionate story of the tragic events leading up to the couple's demise quickly became a classic after Chikamatsu Monzaemon, one of Japan's finest playwrights, rendered it for the Bunraku puppettheatre in 1703. The film version of the Chikamatsu Bunraku drama differs only in its manner of presentation. The scenes from the play are all filmed, not on the puppetstage but in natural locations (Kyoto).

The film has won a number of prizes while on tour both in and outside of Europe.

The director Midori Kurisaki says about the tour in The Japan Times Weekly:
"They saw it as a story about ultimate love between a man and a woman . They understood the emotion completely. In many of the theatres we had standing room only. Even those standing watched in silence and cried profusely at the end of the film. I was so pleased - they even clapped".

The film will be introduced by Birgitta Robinger, Sweden, who has followed the directors work for several years.
